Types of Lasers for Laser Hair Removal 

Ruby Laser

The first ever laser was the Ruby laser and was invented by Theodore Maiman in 1960.  It is a solid-state laser that produces pulses of visible red light at a wavelength of 694.3 nm and that uses a synthetic ruby crystal rod as its gain medium.  It has been traditionally used as an effective method of hair removal for Fitzpatrick skin types I to III as its wavelength is well absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair.

However, it is generally not recommended for individuals with Fitzpatrick types IV to VI.  This is because the shorter wavelength of the Ruby laser system is absorbed more by melanocytes which could possibly result in the occurrence of pigmentation issues and scarring in those skin types.

Diode Laser

Robert N. Hall demonstrated the first laser diode device in 1962.  Diode lasers use semiconductor technology that produces coherent projection of light in the visible to infrared range. It uses a light beam with a narrow spectrum to target specific chromophores in the skin. The 808 nm diode laser wavelength offers the deepest penetration levels and superior melanin absorption. These unique characteristics make the diode laser a popular choice of technology for Laser Hair Removal, enabling safe and effective treatment of all skin and hair types, in all body areas.

The emergence of the Alexandrite laser came in the 1970s.  It is one of the most commonly used types of laser for hair removal across the globe and operates at a shorter (near infrared) wavelength of 755nm.  Alexandrite lasers use an Alexandrite crystal as the laser medium and are highly targeted which makes them effective for treating dark hair in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I to III (and some very light skin type IV).

However, extreme caution is recommended whilst treating Fitzpatrick IV to VI patients as the laser can destroy melanin, resulting in adverse effects such as hypopigmentation.

Nd YAG Laser

Laser operation of Nd:YAG (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) was first demonstrated by J.E. Geusic et al. at Bell Laboratories in 1964. An Nd:YAG laser works at a wavelength of 1064nm and is a solid state laser capable of producing a near-infrared wavelength that penetrates deep into the skin and is readily absorbed by haemoglobin and melanin chromophores.

Nd: YAG uses a synthetic crystal (solid state) that is pumped by a high intensity lamp and placed into a resonator (a cavity capable of amplifying the power of the laser). By creating a variable long pulse duration and an appropriate spot size, it is possible to significantly heat deep skin tissues, such as large blood vessels and vascular lesions.

Nd:YAG lasers target hair in the anagen phase of growth which contributes to a lower risk of burning and improved treatment effectiveness.  It’s also generally accepted that they are the most suitable for treating skin types IV-VI as the absorption by epidermal melanin is much lower than with other wavelengths.

IPL Laser

Intense Pulsed Light (abbreviated IPL) describes the use of intense pulses of non-coherent light distributed over a range of wavelengths; from 400nm to 1200nm. The technology utilises specific wavelength ranges to target various chromophores (blood and melanin) in the skin. This enables effective treatment of a broad spectrum of conditions including hair removal.  IPL is a widely used treatment protocol as it is painless and has a good record of permanent hair removal.  However, as it targets melanin as a chromophore, it is often ineffective on lighter hair that contains less melanin.
